Industrial 3D printing has matured significantly in recent years. What started as a tool for prototyping is now used to produce complex, high\u2011performance components\u00a0\u2013\u00a0particularly for metal parts.<\/h2>\n

At Additive Intelligence 4.0 in Gothenburg, Sweden, Hampus Olsson from EDRMedeso presented how additive manufacturing simulation helps engineering teams manage this complexity and move toward reliable production. Using\u00a0Ansys Additive Manufacturing<\/a>, he\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0how design generation, performance validation, and manufacturing validation can be connected in a single, simulation\u2011driven workflow.<\/p>\n

The case for simulation in Additive Manufacturing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As additive manufacturing moves from prototyping to production, the\u00a0importance of business\u00a0case\u00a0is growing.\u00a0Advantages of additive manufacturing \u2013 such as increased design freedom \u2013 must be\u00a0utilized\u00a0to maximize product value. Meanwhile, the\u00a0cost of getting things wrong increases:\u00a0In metal additive manufacturing, issues such as distortion, residual\u00a0stresses, and build failures often only become visible late in the process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Hampus described during the presentation\u00a0in Gothenburg,\u00a0<\/span>increased design freedom does not automatically lead to better results.<\/span>\u00a0“This freedom of design can present the engineer with a bit of a conundrum,” he said, referring to the challenge of evaluating countless design parameters without simulation support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Simulation addresses this challenge by helping engineers explore, evaluate, and down<\/span>\u2011<\/span>select designs early. By\u00a0validating\u00a0both product performance and manufacturability before printing begins, simulation reduces trial<\/span>\u2011<\/span>and<\/span>\u2011<\/span>error\u00a0and increases confidence when moving toward production.<\/span>

Describing the simulation<\/span><\/span>\u2011<\/span><\/span>driven workflow, Hampus explained: <\/span><\/span>“We start by generating a number of different designs using an algorithm instead of doing it manually with CAD. <\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>design performance \u2013 for example, structural\u00a0<\/span>dynamics\u00a0<\/span>or heat transfer\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is then simulated<\/span>, and <\/span>an optimal<\/span>\u00a0design is chosen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lastly,\u00a0<\/span>manufacturability<\/span>\u00a0is assessed using additive process simulation<\/span>, predicting common build defects such as distortion and overheating.\u00a0<\/span>Several design-and-test iterations can take place before hitting \u2018print<\/span>\u2019,<\/span>\u00a0minimizing\u00a0<\/span>risk<\/span>\u00a0and enabling<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>first-time-right<\/span> production”.<\/span><\/p>\n
